The Splashpower Vision |
Imagine a world where re-charging mobile phones, digital cameras and MP3 players is completely hassle-free and convenient, where you never need to remember to carry a charger with you when you travel.
Well, Splashpower.com has come up with a solution. They have invented a pad that will charge all sorts of devices, simply by adapting their batteries slightly. The extra cost per device is only a fraction of the cost of most devices, so if the idea catches on - or rather, if the Cambridge scientists involved are able to convince major tech companies of the brilliance of their idea - then we'll soon all be using Splashpower mats.
HIGH-CHARGED COFFEE
The genius becomes more apparent when you realise that you won't just have a pad in your home and office for your devices, but coffee shops, airport lounges, hotel lobbys, and other retailers will jump at the chance of enticing customers into staying in their shops longer with a free battery top-up. We may even no longer need to think about charging our devices, if, as Splashpower suggests, the mats are built into furniture!

I'm convinced and can't wait til they are on sale. However, we could have to wait a while; the BBC article, written in March 2003, mentions that the pads were expected to be on sale by the end of that year, while the Splashpower website currently says that the pads are still not yet available in the shops. |
