Reclaiming Hong Kong |
This awesome map shows the amount of reclaimed land in Hong Kong. The darker colours were reclaimed first with the lighter blue areas more recently. It really is an eye-opener to find out that almost all of the places where we shop and eat in Central and Kowloon districts are actually on land that used to be underwater. It feels like Hong Kong is made up of more more reclaimed land than 'real' land.
I've never quite understood the term 'reclaimed land'. It's not as if the land was recently above sea-level, and then the ocean stole it from humanity. 'Claimed land' would make sense, or 'stolen land' would probably be more appropriate. Let's just hope the ocean doesn't decide to one day rise up and sue us all. If it did, Hong Kong would be in trouble! |
