Slums |
With Helen's slum simulation work, it was a privilege to experience what it's really like for some of the people who live on less than $1 a day. This amount is generally accepted as being a rough guide to the level of absolute poverty, and yet we visited people who's one bread-winner was earning just US$30 a month for a family of 5, working out at less than 20cents each a day. The sizes of the houses really shocked us, as some of them we couldn't even stand up in. The slums that we've built as simulations in Hong Kong now seem to big, and too high. And too stable, too.
Helen has helped over 1000 people experience slum life over the last 6 months, and now she is much better equipped to do that in a more informed way. |
