For fellow football mourners (aka England fans) out there, there’s some good news! We're doing pretty well in this competition... We're top of our group! See: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/4650140.stm Yes, I’m now looking ahead to the European Championships, which starts in a matter of months. England have a relatively easy qualifying group, while poor the other 4 British Isles teams (Scotland, Wales, N.Ireland and Rep of Ireland) have tough challenges ahead. England just have to see off Croatia & Russia, and a few other lesser teams before heading to the Finals in Austria & Switzerland in 2008. At the moment, being top of our group has more to do with the draw than our playing skills, but I’m sure that will change come the first qualifying game in the Autumn, even without Wayne Rooney, who will be suspended. Life is less fortunate for fans and players of Australia, Brazil, Argentina, and other teams outside of Europe, who will have to wait four years for a competition of this size. Surprisingly, that doesn’t include Kazakhstan supporters, whose team are allowed to enter the European Championships. They’ll have to do well to qualify, especially with Portugal in their group. A number of people at work seem to think that the World Cup is still going on. Something about switching teams? |
