World Cup XIX: Lions of Lisbon
The last time Portugal reached the quarter finals of the World Cup was in 1966. And guess who knocked Portugal out (in the semi-final)? England! And who won the final? England of course!

I’m hoping for a repeat of the 1947 friendly match, the first ever match between England & Portugal, when England won 10-0. (yes, that is meant to say ‘ten’!) England's victorious team were labelled the "Lions of Lisbon" on their return to England.

Tommy Lawton's first goal was timed at just 17 seconds making it the fastest ever goal scored for England (and it still is). The 2nd goal came just a minute later, with 3 more before the interval, and 5 more again in the second half. Lawton went on to score 4 as did Stan Mortensen. 2 strikers with 4 goals each is just unheard of these days.

Luis Figo, the Portugal captain, should watch out. In 1947, right back and captain Alvaro Cardoso, was substituted and never played again for his national side.

Here's the goals in full. You don't often see a score card like this! ENGLAND'S GOALS
  • - Tommy Lawton 1' (17 seconds)
  • - Stan Mortensen 2'
  • - Tommy Lawton 11'
  • - Tom Finney 21'
  • - Tommy Lawton 38' (Half-time 5-0)
  • - Stan Mortensen 59'
  • - Tommy Lawton 61'
  • - Stan Mortensen 71'
  • - Stan Mortensen 77'
  • - Stanley Matthews 85'
