White-eyes
Helen spotted this bird and its friend jumping around the tree outside our window earlier today. We've never seen them before in Hong Kong and were quite amazed by the bright white rings round their eyes. Turns out that they are Japanese White-eyes (amazing what you can find on wikipedia!), and are quite common across China, Japan and other parts of Asia. They like eating insects and nectar, so that's probably why they like our tree so much.

It's amazing what you see when you take the time to look out your own window!

Wow! I used to have a white-eye, but it escaped from its cage and flew away. See if that one answers to the name of "Whitey."

will look out for him... but considering this is the first time we've seen one of these from our window (or, in fact, ever!), it might not happen. There's always the bird market...

Hi Mike & Helen, long time no see. :)

I have never seen the white-eye myself, so it must be amazing to see it in person. But I'm more amazed by your searching ability that you are able to find out what it is!! Did you search for like "bright white rings" and "bird"? You must be very very good at your job :)

You don't look very hard. These little guys are all over Perowne! They have a nice call too.

Hey ads, we obviously don't look hard enough - still haven't seen one since! Must be because we walk to fast around here.

    Hi Ben,

Yeah, its a bit of an effort to find something online that you have no clue what it's called. I just described it in google images, and then clicked on a few of the results until I found something similar. I guess I pick up a lot of searching ideas through my work.

Looking forward to another hike soon?
