Ten ways to combat mozzies
Just came across a useful page for anyone in HK or a similar city where mosquitoes are far too abundant.

Bird baths and lawn mowers aren't really very common in HK, but the principles still apply. The stuff on types of clothing sounds helpful. And cutting down on still water is by far the best tip, as without water they can't breed. I once heard that mozzies only fly about 20m or so from their original watery home, so if you cut out all water within 20m you're mozzie free.

Although my most successful method so far has been to stick with Helen; for some reason mosquitoes seem to think she tastes much better, so will always attack her first!

Anyone get any more tips?

I am laughing at the mental image of someone going round the entire site doing that - haha. That's a lot of garlic powder!!

In fact there's a lot on that list that we can't do. Wearing light coloured clothes is pretty much the only one we could try. I have heard about taking vitamin B supplements, but never tried it.

The best luck we have had is wearing long sleeves and trousers, and using mozzie repellent. Though even that doesn't stop those tiny things, whatever they are.

Ads, I'll be watching out for you with the garlic powder!

On no.2, it's amazing how many things can collect stagnant water. Getting rid of the big tubs that were holding down the slums helped a lot in that area. And for no.3, I'll be checking the drains and gutters around our house after it rains. We even found some mozzies doing their thing in some of our flower vases, even after Helen had cleaned them out 3 times that day!

And I'm glad to hear there is some basil growing outside our house :) (no 8).

But I was amazed that bug spray was last on that list. I guess they were looking to save money.

Did you know that there is a lake in northern Iceland that is named after the myriads of mozzies that surround it? The Icelandic for lake or water is 'vatn'. Hence the lake is called Myvatn. Ask little Helen Tozer - she's been there!

The best way of being mozzie free is to get ill with jaundice. That way they'll avoid you. I'm living proof of that!
