World Cup XV: Sydney Morning Herald: That wasn't a penalty: Hiddink |
Australia have a lot to be proud of: The Sydney Morning Herald: : "Australia's only previous World Cup experience was 32 years ago, also in Germany. They returned without scoring a goal. Now they will go back with a number of firsts - their first-ever goals, first-ever win, and first-ever qualification for the round of 16.
Victorious Italian coach Marcello Lippi admitted that Australia were a tough team to play.
"We were concerned about their high-tempo game and their tireless running and, because of that, we treated them with a lot of respect," said Lippi. "And with a man down, we had to show great determination and organisation to keep going."
Mixing it with experienced international sides ranked much higher than them, they left a mark on world football. Close losses to five-time champions Brazil and three-time champions Italy only emphasised how far they have come. |
