World Cup XVI: England v Portugal |
Can't wait til the next England match! Saturday evening against Portugal. It looks set to be a cracker of a match. The last time we met Portugal in a major competition was just 2 years ago in Euro 2004, when Portugal (the hosts of the tournament) won on penalties 6-5, after drawing 2-2 in extra time. Michael Owen put us ahead, then Portugal equalised. In the 90th minute Sol Campbell had a goal controversially disallowed, forcing the match into extra time. Portugal then went ahead, and it took a last gasp Lampard goal to save us. But it wasn’t to be, with us being beaten for the 4th time in a Euro/World tournament on penalties.
Then, of course, Portual also helped knock us out of Euro 2000 (Even after we went two goals ahead). What is it with us and Portugal?
So, we can expect a close match, especially after both teams scraped through their 2nd round matches both with 1-0 wins. England should have a slight advantage, with Costinha and Deco suspended (both were sent off in the Holland match) and Christiano Ronaldo is looking doubtful with an injury.
Come on England! |

I have a good feeling about this one! Was chatting to Bengy today and he reckons its third time lucky...just like our games with Germany and Argentina. Let's see what happens. ;o)
