Soccer Made Simple |
[This was written ages back during the world cup, but for some reason it was never published...]
I've been asked by readers of this blog for tips on watching soccer for people unfamilar to the game. So, here's a few links for you.
Fox sports has a decent article on this very topic, Simple rules for the 'beautiful game'. It gives a simple introduction to the tournament and a good overview of each of the 32 teams, but doesn't give much meat once you start clicking on further links.
'The Ignorant American's Guide to the World Cup' is off to a bad start, with the author admitting that he knows nothing about football. I'm lost with most of his references. But then again, it might make a lot of sense to Americans? His best advice is about Brazil's Ronaldinho, who "does ungodly things with the ball - treat yourself to a YouTube search of his most dazzling moments".
FIFA are the ones that enforce the rules, so they should know what they are talking about (But then again, haven't they put USA in their top ten rankings, above Argentina?!)
Wikipedia also have a useful page on soccer rules.
Or, if you prefer to have a book in your hand so you can read it while watching the football, Soccer Made Simple might help.
And talking of our readers, we now know where you live! Yes, we're now using Google Analytics to keep track of whether anyone is actually reading our website. And it turns out, much to our surprise, that some people are! We don't know who, but we do know which city you are viewing our site from! You can see a smaller version of a similar map in the column on the right. |
